Diwali Celebration Ideas for the Office in UAE: Planning the Lunch, the Potluck and the Cutlery

بواسطة Kevin Millet 04 Nov 2026 0 تعليقات

Most UAE offices mark Diwali with a dress up day in traditional wear, a rangoli or some diyas at reception, a box of sweets, and a shared lunch. The lunch is the part that needs planning. For a buffet or a potluck, order one individually wrapped cutlery set per person plus about 10%, and a packet of loose wooden forks for desserts. Everything below explains why, and how to get it right for your headcount.

With a large share of the UAE's workforce from India and neighbouring countries, Diwali is celebrated in a great many offices across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Plenty of guides online list ideas for Indian workplaces. Very few deal with the practical side here, where the lunch is often catered, the pantry is small, and the person organising it also has a full workload. This one does.

When is Diwali 2026 in the UAE?

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. Since Sunday is part of the weekend for most UAE offices, many teams will hold their celebration on Friday 6 November or Monday 9 November. Pick the date early. It decides when your catering and supplies need to arrive, and the week before Diwali is the busiest of the year for Indian restaurants and sweet shops across the country.

What are easy Diwali celebration ideas for the office in the UAE?

The best Diwali celebration ideas for office UAE teams use are simple and inclusive, so colleagues of every background can join in. A few that work well:

  • A traditional wear day, with a quick group photo at reception.

  • A rangoli competition between departments, using coloured powder or flowers on a board rather than the floor.

  • Electric diyas or LED lights instead of real flames, which keeps building management and fire safety happy.

  • A sweets table, with mithai from a local sweet shop.

  • A short talk from a colleague about what Diwali means to their family.

  • A shared lunch, either catered or as a potluck.

Most offices combine three or four of these. The lunch is the one that brings everyone into the same room, and it is the one that needs the most planning.

Should you cater the office Diwali lunch or run a potluck?

Both work. A catered office Diwali lunch Dubai teams book from a local Indian restaurant is easier to manage and usually arrives with its own containers. The alternative is a Diwali potluck at office, which is cheaper, friendlier and gives colleagues a chance to share family recipes.

There is one problem potlucks always run into. Everyone brings food. Nobody brings cutlery. Thirty dishes of biryani, chole and kheer arrive at 12:30, and the pantry has eight spoons. Caterers can have the same gap, because many deliver food in trays and assume the client has the rest.

So whichever route you choose, the organiser should own the cutlery, plates and napkins. That is the one part of the lunch that cannot be left to chance.

Why use individually wrapped cutlery at an office buffet?

Because a buffet line is the least hygienic place in the building. Forty people queue, each one reaching into the same cutlery tray with the same hands they just used to open the pantry door. Individually wrapped cutlery for buffets solves that: each person takes one wrapped set, and nobody touches anyone else's fork.

It is also faster. Hotpack's wooden cutlery pack puts a spoon, fork, knife and napkin together in one pack, so the queue moves at the speed of the food, not the cutlery tray. One pick up, everything you need, and a napkin you do not have to hunt for.

And it looks right. A natural wooden set beside a spread of festive food feels more considered than a jumble of thin plastic, which matters when senior management, or clients, are joining the lunch. If you are comparing any disposable cutlery set for office party use, this is the one that gives you the most in one grab.

How much cutlery do you need for 100 people?

Plan on 110 complete sets for 100 people. Most guests use one set, but someone always drops a spoon, a few people come back for dessert with a clean fork, and colleagues from another floor tend to appear once they smell the food.

If there are sweets or desserts, add loose wooden forks on the side, roughly one and a half per person. They save people from using their main course cutlery on a gulab jamun.

Headcount

150 (two packets of 100)

200

220

300 (three packets of 100)

The wrapped packs come 250 to a box, so one box covers any office lunch up to about 225 people with the 10% buffer included. That is the simplest answer to how much cutlery for 100 people, or for 200.

Where can you buy disposable cutlery in bulk in the UAE?

Party shops sell disposable cutlery in small packs, which is fine for a birthday at home and impractical for an office. Supermarket delivery apps carry bigger sets, though not always in the quantities an office lunch needs.

To buy disposable cutlery in bulk UAE offices can order directly from the Hotpack webstore:

Delivery is free on webstore orders above AED 99, and a box of 250 cutlery packs is above that on its own. For a bigger choice of styles, the full wooden cutlery collection has individually wrapped wooden spoons and forks too.

The office Diwali lunch checklist

Copy this into your calendar and work down it:

  • Two weeks before: fix the date (Friday 6 or Monday 9 November) and choose catered or potluck.

  • Ten days before: book the caterer, or send round a potluck sign up sheet so you do not get eight biryanis and no dessert.

  • One week before: order cutlery, one wrapped pack per person plus 10%, and wooden forks for sweets.

  • Three days before: confirm headcount with each department and order the mithai.

  • The day before: set up the buffet table, put out the cutlery packs at the start of the line, and the dessert forks beside the sweets.

  • On the day: take the group photo before the food comes out. Nobody wants a photo after lunch.

Get the cutlery sorted this week

Diwali week is the busiest of the year for every Indian restaurant and sweet shop in the UAE, so caterers will be stretched and last minute requests are harder to fill. The cutlery is the one part of the lunch you can tick off today. Order the wooden cutlery packs and a packet of wooden forks now, and it is done.

If your company is also sending sweets or hampers to clients, our guide to Diwali gift packaging ideas for businesses and corporate hampers covers that side, and Diwali shopping in Dubai: the party supplies you should order online has the rest of the festive list. Happy Diwali from all of us at Hotpack.
